In the 18th century the city governemnt leased the town café and tap rooms. In one of the auctions in 1774 the bidding for the café was so unclear that the Croatian Royal Council had to intervene. They decided that Varaždin would get another café, in the basement of the City Hall.
The town magistrate didn't want a second café so a tap room was opened instead. „So people can have some use of it“- was the conclusion. So the town was left with one café. The times have changed and the city offer and social life was enriched by new cafés. One of them, the „Dora“ café, is located in the building of the Varaždin's biggest tavern „Crni orao“ (Black eagle). With its offer, „Dora“ continues the stories of the Varaždin feasts, where people enjoyed the famous Varaždin klipić (rolled dough), cheese cakes and strudels.
