„Šanjek“ restaurant and diner

Medieval Varaždin had around 3500 inhabitants in the mid-18th century. Every other grown male worked as a craftman of some kind- there were 273 craftsmen and almost 400 of their assistants and apprentices.

The Šanjek family has been continuing the tradition of the butcher's trade in Varaždin since 1953, when the first fast food butcher's shop was opened. They have been enriching the already luxurious offer of the Varaždin cuisine with horse meat delicacies.

The intoxicating scent of different kinds of sausages has been spreading through the Freedom Square since then.

Around 15 years ago they opened a restaurant, making Varaždin the only city in Croatia with a specialized restaurant for horse and foal meat dishes. As in the legendary feasts of the Varaždin's butcher's guild, here at the Šanjek restaurant you will eat the dishes made by the recipes written down by grandma Šanjek.
