In the mid-18th century Varaždin was surrounded by moats filled with water from the Drava river, so they were also the source of fish for the people, so it became part of their menus. Fish was served, along with game, on all official feasts in town and in the town vineyards.
In the early 19th century a Classicist corner house was built on the west side of the former „moat coast“, across the today's Water tower. The house was described by the experts as „an interesting architectual- urbanistic move typical for Varaždin“. Today it houses the Palatin restaurant, where the preparation of river fish is still nourished.
